I have worked in a number of companies to introduce AT in the workplace.
Previous clients include Reuters, Standard Chartered Bank, Emap Women’s Group, Worthingtons, Whitbread plc, Royal Mail, Eagle Star and BACS.
In August 2008 the British Medical Journal published the results of a clincal trial which proved lessons in Alexander Technique have a long term benefit as an intervention to back pain. (www.bmj.com/channels/research.dtl) Back pain afflicts up to 49% of the population costing NHS, business and the economy £5 billion a year. ALexander Technique can also PREVENT back pain, although this is harder to measure of course. It is also helpful for RSI, stress, and other postural disorders, all sadly rather common for those working daily with computers.
However you don’t need to have a problem to benefit! It is also known to develop mastery in voice, presentation, creative thinking, sports and industry.
Now is the time to start thinking of inviting an Alexander Teacher to come in and help you work easily freely and productively. Depending on the company, I run one-off introductory workshops or organise regular weekly group or individual sessions, either paid by the company or by the individual.
Often it may not be management that invites a teacher in, but an enlightened worker who gets permission for a workshop. So if you are a devotee of Alexander already, maybe you could approach your line manager. health and safety, human resources to suggest it… Imagine a room at work where you can lie down in semi-supine without someone asking what on earth are you doing!
Please email me on alexpen@onetel.com to discuss further.
‘I found that the twice weekly session forced me to take a physical break from hours at the terminal and immediately made a difference to pain I had constantly felt in my fingers, hands, arms, and neck.’

“After many years of comfortably hunching over a desk and peering at a computer I began to develop a non-specific stiffness and general sense of discomfort in my back and neck areas. I tried relaxing massages and other therapies which were highly enjoyable but gave only temporary relief before I settled back into my previous habits. The Alexander Technique has provided me with the tools to recognise the source of these tensions and to let go of these habits.”
