  • Butterflies and the Alexander Technique

“Adding wings to caterpillars does not create butterflies–it creates awkward and dysfunctional caterpillars. Butterflies are created through transformation.”

    Stephanie Marshall.

A metaphor for what Alexander called ‘end-gaining’.

Let’s just stop interfering with our systems, so we can change naturally.

I will be teaching again from January 4th, so feel free to try out a lesson and see if a course in Alexander Technique is what suits.  alexpen@onetel.com….

  • Neck Pain and Alexander Technique trial

We always know that the AT works well for such things as neck and back pain, but it does need to be tested, and here’s the results of a study recently published comparing AT, acupuncture and normal GP care for chronic neck pain: 31 % reduction in pain even after a year following 20 half hour lessons

  • Actor Jonathan Pryce and Alexander Technique

I always loved this guy and now I know why:

Q: Which book changed your life?
Jonathan: The one the teacher put under my head during the Alexander technique sessions at Rada. I grew an inch and a half.

  • Sitting and standing is like a carousel

“Sitting and standing is like a carousel – up and over and forward – all at the same time”

That’s what one of my students said today. …. wonderful analogy!

  • How’s your body map?

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lCRtQBgn1uE

My student today who is 6′ 5″  said he reckoned he was like the dogs in those pictures in the link above. It is true that sometimes our brain’s body map is skewed. I remember an esteemed experienced colleague said she always thought she was smaller than she was and couldn’t understand why her clothes always felt tight. Her realization happened when she was on her Alexander training……
