Inhibition is a main principle of the Alexander Technique – it doesn’t mean suppression in the Freudian sense, but a stopping of a neural message going to a muscle. When we think of doing something, like predictive text our brain sends out messages of preparation – if we are to change our habit we need to stop this preparation. Wonderful example this Saturday at the Royal Festival Hall at the start of the RPO’s rendition of Beethoven’s 9th when the conductor held up his baton and all the musicians ‘lifted’ themselves to begin to play, and he held them and held them and I thought – wow this is really zen! – and then he took his arms down and everyone relaxed for a moment , before he held his arms aloft again and… off they went. I expect he’s had Alexander lessons – a lot of musicians have. The conductor was Vladimir Jurowski by the way.
